Is Fox Car Rental Good? According to the customer reviews… No. The short answer? Maybe. The long answer? It really depends, so let’s dive into it.

It really is true here that you get what you pay for. Booking the cheapest rental car around and expecting a Rolls Royce is like booking on Spirit and demanding free champagne. It ain’t gonna happen sister.

Fox’s prices are drastically lower than the competition a lot of the time because they don’t have the extra add-ons, their offices are away from the airport…and you might end up getting a bike instead of an actual car.

Booking online

The booking process is fairly straightforward: type in all the relevant information and see a variety of different cars available during your visit. After fooling around with the system trying in different combos, I learned a few things:

• Generally, there’s a discount if you rent the car by the week, so if you need a car for 6 days, check the week price to see if it’s a better deal
• There’s about a 30 minute leeway (online) before you get charged for the entire day. For example, if you pick the car up at 8
• Prices change rapidly and without warning so before you plan on booking, see what the range is

Getting to the car rental

Fox Rent a Car has rentals in big cities across the US, so I’d suggest researching exactly where the office is located to avoid confusion. You might be able to walk there from the terminal, or take a shuttle bus depending which airport you visit.

My first rental was away from the airport (Salt Lake) and I don’t know if it was a lack of communication, but I waited almost an hour at the airport for the shuttle along with a dozen other people who were also not too pleased. Next time, I’ll just get the $5 Uber.

Another airport (Phoenix) had all of the rental cars in one place and a timely shuttle that I waited just a few minutes for, so I really think you should do the research into the airport you’re flying into to see how much of a hassle it will be to get there.

Getting the car

I read some horror stories about people not being able to get the car they had reserved, which is the only real thing that had me worried. I reserved online, but I didn’t pay just in case they ran out of cars or didn’t have the one I wanted.

I opted for a basic car and in one instance got a Kia Soul that was in decent shape but had plenty of scratches around the car, and in the second instance received an almost new Hyundai with only 5,000 miles in perfect condition.

Both times the wait wasn’t too long once I reached the car rental, but it really depends not only on how many people are in front of you, but how annoying they are and how incompetent the front desk agents are. Both times I had trouble finding the cars, but did actually get a car, and a clean one at that!

Likely scams

Fox Rent a Car is good at scams (most companies are though, so no extra judgement). During both of my rentals, the front desk person tried to scam me. In the first instance the woman told me I didn’t have to decide just then if I wanted to prepay for gas and I could come back with either a full tank or pay the $1.79 per gallon when I dropped it off if I decided to bring it back empty.

Since I haven’t had much experience renting cars, I didn’t know that this is a lie. You MUST bring the car back full if you don’t prepay, no matter what you’re told. If you bring it back less than full they will charge you upwards of $11 per gallon as a “convenience” fee.

Luckily, I was super nice to the guy I was giving the car back to when dropping it off and made sure it was clean, so I think he let it slide and I wasn’t penalized over $70.

The second scam also involves fuel; During my second rental I decided to go ahead and prepay because the gas was cheaper than on the streets, plus I wanted to ensure I wasn’t penalized if I didn’t have time to fill it up myself before dropping it off.

What the guy intentionally failed to mention was that even though you’re getting a lower price, there’s a convenience fee for them to fill it up for you, meaning you’re not saving any money and actually pay a premium for the gas. Again, this is something I’ll know in the future but since I’m new to the car rental game, I was previously unaware.

Another potential scam that I heard about but didn’t experience involves the company saying you damaged the car even when you didn’t. I avoided this by religiously checking the outside (and next time inside) for any flaws and writing them carefully down on the sheet you turn in before taking your car.

A pro tip I learned from someone online: take photos of the car before you accept it and email those photos to yourself. If there’s an altercation, you can prove what the car looked like on the date you received it.

Value

Overall, the value really depends on your experience. I didn’t have too many issues, and for the price think it was pretty spectacular, especially since I was given a running car with AC.

The desk agents will try to nickel and dime you at every quarter (ha ha); it’s how they make commission. My suggestion is, if you’re planning to upgrade, do it at the counter to benefit that employee (but only if they’re nice).

Again, if you’re looking for the best experience with low hassle and a luxury car, Fox Rental is not for you! But, if you’re looking for a killer deal and don’t mind jumping through a few hoops, you’ll come out ahead.

How to get the best deal

Like all things online, prices fluctuate. I’ve seen dramatic increases and decreases on the price of Fox Rent A Car in just a few hours, so imagine how different it can be over several days.

I’ve only made reservations without paying online, so I’m not sure how this would work if you’ve paid (don’t recommend), but I was able to cancel a reservation several different times when I saw a better price and lock in more savings, around $1-2 per day.

If you see a good deal, just book it! You can always cancel later and you might not find such a great price again.

General car rental tips:

• Always take photos and write down the condition of the car before accepting it
• Make sure the price online is the price you’re paying in person. Don’t sign anything until they match up
• Keep your receipt just in case they try to tack on extra fees afterwards
• Extra drivers cost a lot of money, but you can add your spouse for free!
