When you’re printing out standard documents on an at-home printer, you don’t normally need to think too much about the size – they’re usually single sheets of A4. However, if you’re printing something a different size – or are printing specific marketing or advertising material, you may need to use a different size.

Did you know that there are actually nine different ‘A’ series paper sizes? Not too many people would be able to list off how big each size is. So, we’ve put together a handy guide to make life easier for you.

Size and aspect ratio guide for A series paper sizes

Below are A0 – A8 paper sizes to the nearest millimetre, centimetre, inch and their aspect ratio.

A0 – 841 mm X 1189 mm – 84.1cm x 118.9cm – 33.11 inch x 46.81 inch – (aspect ratio) (1.414:1).

A1 – 594 mm X 841 mm – 59.4cm x 84.1cm – 23.39 inch x 33.11 inch – (1.414:1).

A2 – 420 mm X 594 mm – 42m x 59.4cm – 15.52 inch x 23.39 inch -1:1.41.

A3 – 297 mm X 420 mm – 29.7cm x 42cm- 11.69nch x 15.52 inch – 1:1.41.

A4 – 210 mm X 297 mm – 21cm x 29.7cm – 8.26 inch x 11.69 inh -1:1.41.

A5 – 148mm X 210 mm – 14.8cm x 21cm – 5.82 inch x 8.26 inch – 1:1.41.

A6 – 105 mm X 148 mm – 10.5cm x 14.8cm – 4.13 inch x 5.82 inch – 1:1.41.

Popular paper sizes & printing formats

Everyone knows that A4 is the most popular paper size- it’s used commonly for all different kinds of content, material and reasons. However, A4 doesn’t work for everything – especially for more professional-looking content that is being used for a particular reason, like an event invitation or a flyer.

While A4 paper size may be good for business letterheads, if you received an advertising flyer in your inbox that was printed on standard A4 series paper, you may think it looks pretty amateur. This is where different paper sizes and paper formats come into play. For example, professional flyers generally use A6 series paper size, this size is equivalent to a quarter of an A4, so it’s a lot easier and cheaper to mail out and is also is a good size for a receiver to stick on a fridge.

A series paper sizes and B series paper sizes are used across the world and the term ISO standard actually describes the international standard of paper size that’s used in most countries that use the metric system.

However, it’s important to note that ‘A’ series paper sizes are certainly not a one-size-fits-all format. Sometimes a product will require a paper size that’s outside of the ‘A’ series paper size range. Flyers

A flyer is used as advertising or as a marketing product to get eyes on a good or service. Flyers are often distributed to people’s letterboxes or handed out at public places. Flyers usually come in huge stacks, so when it comes to production costs, small flyers will work out much cheaper than printing a bigger size.

Brochures

Brochures are actually printed on A4 sized paper, but because of their tri-fold, it does tend to look different from your typical A4 size. Brochures are usually folded into three sections horizontally and are used to sell a product or service.

Postcards

When handling a postcard, one of the first things you’ll probably notice is the thickness of the card. Postcards are generally made on 350GSM card, giving off a sleek and upscale feel. They are often used as invitation cards or as promotional material.

Letterheads

Letterheads are used in almost every successful business. They are essentially a logo, and some contact details that line the header and the footer of the page, and the a4 page can be run through a normal printer. A well-designed letterhead will make a formal document look more professional.

Letterheads are generally printed on A4 paper formats, this makes it easy for the letterhead to be loaded in a normal printer to print a document of the same size.

Booklets

Booklets can be used as sleek and luxe-looking marketing material. They can be a catalogue showcasing different products. At Space Print we print the booklets in full colour, using high-quality materials, like matt or gloss 150GSM paper.

Presentation folders
